Can you make your own cornice?
A super easy and inexpensive way is to make your own custom window cornice. Now, I’m not reinventing the wheel here with this tutorial. But this is a very simple way to give your home a custom wow factor and flex your DIY skills in the process.

How do you make a cornice for a window box?
Cut everything to 1-ft. lengths and mock up several different combinations. Just squirt a little wood glue on the pieces and clamp them together for about 10 minutes. Hold the cornice mock-ups over the opening to get a feel for the final look. If you plan to paint your cornices, poplar and aspen are good choices for the box materials.

Position the top flush at the back and overhanging the front and sides evenly; secure it with glue and brad nails. Measure the sides of the cornice and cut the crown, ogee, and cap molding to fit, with 45-degree miter cuts at the outside corners and 90-degree cuts where the pieces will meet the wall.

Cut the molding at 45 degree angles in your miter box or power miter saw at the corners. Make sure the back of the molding is pressed up against the back fence of the miter box/saw when cutting. Attach the trim to the bottom of the cornice box using wood glue and the 3/4″ brad nails.
